Hurricane Season is Here – Here’s How to Prepare Your Central Maryland Home

June 19, 2019
A hurricane, no matter how small, is always strong enough to cause widespread devastation to a whole community. It can shatter lives, damage property, and leave you feeling hopeless. However, we all have a chance here to prepare ahead of time. It’s hurricane season along the coast, which means storm weather will be upon us shortly. Before the next big named storm hits the coast, homeowners in Central Maryland should start preparing now. Here is how to prevent storm damage and protect your home and family this season.

Planning This Hurricane Season
You should not wait until there is a hurricane just off the coast. By then, it’s far too late. Start planning now, before the weather stations pick up the next big storm headed our way. Here’s how to prepare your home for hurricane season, and your family, too.

1. Plan your evacuation route now. You’ll surely receive instructions from local authorities and radio stations about where to evacuate and meet. You should have a finely tuned route to the nearest storm shelters for yourself, though.

2. Keep a supply of non-perishable goods nearby for the worst-case scenario. Your emergency supply kit should include enough food and water for three days per person, medical supplies, a NOAA weather radio, flashlight, and extra batteries.

3. Keep a personal inventory of your possessions in and around the home. You’ll want to make a detailed list of any items, especially if they end up lost or damaged, to give to the insurance company.

4. Review your insurance policy early. It’s better to understand the fine print now, including your coverage limits, expenses, and deductibles for storm damage of any kind.

5. To better protect your home, consider the following steps:

  • Replace any gravel or rock in your landscape with shredded bark, as it is light and will not cause much damage.
  • Cut back weak branches or trees that could fall on the roof.
  • Invest in storm shutters to better protect your windows from breaking due to debris or high wind speeds.
  • Ensure your exterior doors are hurricane proof, with at least three hinges and a deadbolt firmly in place.
  • All sliding glass doors in the house should be made of tempered glass to ensure they do not break easily.
  • Replace old garage doors and tracks with approved items that withstand wind pressure and are impact resistant.
  • Seal any outside wall openings thoroughly, including electrical outlets, vents, and garden hose bibs.
6. If you live in a mobile home, ensure it is secure against high winds and water damage.
