When it rains, how can you help stop the flooding in your basement?
Does your basement flood when it rains in Central Maryland?

Basement floods aren’t only caused by heavy rainfalls. When the spring rains come, it’s great for new growth, but bad for your basement if water leaks in. Even small amounts of water can get into your home and cause water damage.
Unforeseen plumbing problems are common when the seasons change due to temperature fluctuations and melting snow and ice causing water to puddle in the rain gutters. When the water drips down the downspouts, it can saturate the ground forcing water in through weak spots in your foundation or cracks in mortar joints.
Why does my basement flood when it rains?
- Basement leaks are from pressure created by water in the soil around your foundation. There are 3 different kinds of pressure that can cause water to come into your basement.
- Loose foundation soil absorbs water so any water overflowing from clogged rain gutters and downspouts will pool up next to the foundation causing the soil to expand and put lateral pressure against the foundation walls which leads to cracks and foundation damage. The rain enters through the cracks.
- If a window well was incorrectly installed, then it can fill with rainwater and leak into your basement.
- Constant rain will cause soil saturation that causes hydrostatic (water) pressure which forces moisture through your basement floor and walls.
- Any cracks in your foundation walls or floor is an open invitation for water intrusion. Your basement can suffer a lot of damage.
What can I do to prevent basement flooding?
- Have your lateral sewer lines inspected for blockages or tree root intrusion
- Grading the landscape away from your foundation
- Have your pipes snaked annually
- Seal vents, exterior openings and window wells
- Check your basement walls for weak spots or cracks
- Extend your downspouts at a minimum of 5 feet from your home’s foundation
- Consult a professional to see if you need repairs or waterproofing.
